STYLE PROFILE 005: KELSEY SPENCER

Style Profiles is a series on Matcha Had Me highlighting my amazing friends and their incredible senses of style.  Someone's style says so much about them – from what they're into, how they choose to present themselves and really show who they are.  I love supporting those I care about, so this is a chance to showcase all their best lewks and learn more a little about them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Style Profile 005 features none other than my good friend and favorite banshee, Kelsey Spencer! Kelsey and I became friends in high school after realizing how many friends we had in common. We happened to take an SAT in the same room once, and on one of the breaks, I distinctly remember us saying “Okay, I guess we’re friends now,” to each other. The rest was history.

Kelsey and I have seen many, many ups and downs together – beachweek, fights with friends, our first Bonnaroo, New Orleans, etc. Through it all, I’ve always admired Kelsey’s tenacity and drive as well as her calming nature and ability to turn up any functions.

Kelsey’s style through it all is always sweet and chic. She really knows what works for her and is never afraid to try something that might not have the best appeal – like her Dr. Marten’s sandals I used to questions. Kelsey’s lewks are always easy and vibrant – much like her.

Here’s what Kelsey had to say:

MHM: How would you describe your personal style?
KS: Comfortable and classic with a hint of glam.

What’s one item in your closet you can’t live without?
My black leather jacket.

What's your go-to outfit?
A really nice pair of skinny jeans, a crisp tee shirt, and hoops. I’d like to think that I do basics well.

Whose style do you admire?

  1. Olivia Culpo (left) – Love now she plans with shape and texture.

  2. Padma Lakshmi (center) – I’m a huge foodie, so naturally also a big Top Chef fan. Over the seasons, I have love Padma Lakshmi’s versatile style. She takes smart, bold fashion risks but knows how dress up or down a look so effortlessly. Also, serious question.....does that woman age?!

  3. Tracee Ellis Ross (right) – Call me crazy, but I am always looking what Tracee Ellis Ross is wearing. Beyond the sometimes questionable taste, her confidence is magnetic and it’s hard NOT to look twice and admire.

Do you have motto when it comes to your style or how you choose to dress?
Comfort first, fashion second. Unless you’re going to Coachella!

What fashion or style advice would you give to your younger self?
Take more risks! I grew up in a school uniform for many years of my life which is why I got very used to staying in my comfort zone. I wish younger Kelsey would feel empowered to play with color/texture more and not feel pressured to look like every other girl in Maryland with the the same generic crop top and Urban Outfitters jean shorts.

Favorite outfit or two you’ve ever worn?
I loved my Day 2 Coachella look last year which was a cameo dress from Aritzia. I feel like the look was a perfect combination of comfortable with a hint of glam. I also have a structured, white leather dress that is a staple in my closet. I got in for Paris Fashion Week at Zara (obviously the Europe selection), and it’s turned into one of my favorite options for nights out or events.

What’s your favorite trend right now?
Activewear that you can wear all the time! Living in the Bay Area for the past year and a half has made me a healthier, more mindful person all around. I am a lot more thoughtful about what goes into my body and how I can maintain a balanced style of living, both physically and mentally. I got to know a brand called Outdoor Voices, which is all about living an active lifestyle and feeling comfortable in your own skin. I’m now an ambassador for the brand, so my favorite trend right now is active wear that makes you feel comfortable and not constrained.

And one you can't stand?
I really really really just do not understand super low rise jeans and am terrified thar they are coming back. As a woman with curves...they are just a no.

And just cause I have to ask, what’s your favorite matcha item?
Matcha Kit Kat bars!
